COURSE DESCRIPTION
This course is designed to teach the history of macroscopic examination of urine with the naked eye which remained a fundamental diagnostic technique even in modern medicine. Indeed, it continues to be appreciated by most physicians as highly valuable to gain essential insight into the nature and causes of various illnesses. Moreover, not only among the people who take care of their health consciously but also among health professionals it never loses its significance as a personal health care ritual.
THE UNIQUENESS OF THE CURRICULUM
In the curriculum of this course, the legacy of the urinalysis and urine color charts is synopsized into three distinct periods in the history of medicine that are associated with three different geological places and, therefore, different methods of determining the diagnosis:
- From 4000 BC to the 16th century AD, bedside medicine was prevalent. The diagnostic methods were based on what ancient physicians could observe with their eyes and ears, which also included the examination of human specimens. The ancient Greeks attributed all diseases to the imbalances of bodily fluids called Humours, and throughout the late medieval period, physicians used a glass flask known as Qarora or Matula to perform urine diagnosis known as “uroscopy”.
- From the 17th to the 18th century came hospital medicine; in which patients must come to the hospitals with a small jar of urine and the physicians developed their own way of diagnosing these specimens.
- From the 19th century onwards, laboratory medicine has served as medicine’s lodestar. The microscopic study of urine revealed not only the cellular structure of the human tissues but also the microbial organisms that cause diseases named “Urinalysis”.
COURSE LEARNING OUTCOMES
- Comprehension of the captivating history of urine diagnosis and how the Uroscopists penned their diagnostic perceptive in various centuries in chronological order.
- In-depth understanding of how the art of urine diagnosis transformed from Uroscopy to Uromancy and now into modern-day urinalysis.
- At the end of this course, learners will acknowledge why we believe that “if eyes are the windows into the soul the urine is the window into the body”.
